 A New Kind of Science

A New Kind of Science

$47.44

This long-awaited work from one of the world’s most respected scientists presents a series of dramatic discoveries never before made public. Starting from a collection of simple computer experiments–illustrated in the book by striking computer graphics–Stephen Wolfram shows how their unexpected results force a whole new way of looking at the operation of our universe. Wolfram uses his approach to tackle a remarkable array of fundamental problems in science, from the origins of apparent randomness in physical systems, to the development of complexity in biology, the ultimate scope and limitations of mathematics, the possibility of a truly fundamental theory of physics, the interplay between free will and determinism, and the character of intelligence in the universe. Written with exceptional clarity, and illustrated by nearly a thousand original pictures, this seminal book allows scientists and nonscientists alike to participate in what promises to be a major intellectual revolution. About the Author: Stephen Wolfram was born in London and educated at Eton, Oxford, and Caltech. He received his Ph.D. in theoretical physics in 1979 at the age of 20, having already made lasting contributions to particle physics and cosmology. In 1981 his work was recognized by a MacArthur award. In the early 1980s he made a series of classic discoveries about systems known as cellular automata, which have yielded many new insights in physics, mathematics, computer science, biology, and other fields. In 1986 he founded Wolfram Research, Inc. and began the creation of Mathematica, now the world’s leading software system for technical computing and symbolic programming, and the tool that made A New Kind of Science possible. Over the past decade Wolfram has divided his time between the leadership of his company and his pursuit of basic science.

Microcontroller Projects in C for the 8051

$67.49

This book is a thoroughly practical way to explore the 8051 and discover C programming through project work. Through graded projects, Dogan Ibrahim introduces the reader to the fundamentals of microelectronics, the 8051 family, programming in C, and the use of a C compiler. The specific device used for examples is the AT89C2051 – a small, economical chip with re-writable memory, readily available from the major component suppliers. A working knowledge of microcontrollers, and how to program them, is essential for all students of electronics. In this rapidly expanding field many students and professionals at all levels need to get up to speed with practical microcontroller applications. Their rapid fall in price has made microcontrollers the most exciting and accessible new development in electronics for years – rendering them equally popular with engineers, electronics hobbyists and teachers looking for a fresh range of projects. Microcontroller Projects in C for the 8051 is an ideal resource for self-study as well as providing an interesting, enjoyable and easily mastered alternative to more theoretical textbooks. Dogan Ibrahim has been Associate Professor and Head of Department at the Near East University, Cyprus, lecturer at South Bank University, London, Principal Research Engineer at GEC Hirst Research Centre, and is now a hardware and software systems consultant to London’s Traffic Control Systems Unit. This volume gives an overview of the state-of-the-art with respect to the development of all types of parallel computers and their application to a wide range of problem areas. The international conference on parallel computing ParCo97 (Parallel Computing 97) was held in Bonn, Germany from 19 to 22 September 1997. The first conference in this biannual series was held in 1983 in Berlin. Further conferences were held in Leiden (The Netherlands), London (UK), Grenoble (France) and Gent (Belgium). From the outset the aim with the ParCo (Parallel Computing) conferences was to promote the application of parallel computers to solve real life problems. In the case of ParCo97 a new milestone was reached in that more than half of the papers and posters presented were concerned with application aspects. This fact reflects the coming of age of parallel computing. Some 200 papers were submitted to the Program Committee by authors from all over the world. The final programme consisted of four invited papers, 71 contributed scientific/industrial papers and 45 posters. In addition a panel discussion on Parallel Computing and the Evolution of Cyberspace was held. During and after the conference all final contributions were refereed. Only those papers and posters accepted during this final screening process are included in this volume. The practical emphasis of the conference was accentuated by an industrial exhibition where companies demonstrated the newest developments in parallel processing equipment and software. Speakers from participating companies presented papers in industrial sessions in which new developments in parallel computing were reported.

Excerpt: The Atomic Energy Research Establishment (known as AERE or colloquially Harwell ) near Harwell , Oxfordshire , was the main centre for atomic energy research and development in the United Kingdom from the 1940s to the 1990s.Founding In 1945 John Cockcroft was asked to set up a research laboratory to further the use of nuclear fission for both military purposes and generating energy. The criteria for selection involved finding somewhere remote with a good water supply, but within reach of good transport links and a university with a nuclear physics laboratory. This more or less limited the choice to Oxford or Cambridge . It had been decided that an RAF airfield would be chosen, the aircraft hangars being ideal to house the large atomic piles that would need to be built. Although Cambridge University had the better nuclear physics facility (the Cavendish Laboratory ), the RAF did not want to abandon any of its eastern airfields (because of the new threat of the Cold War ), therefore Harwell was chosen when the RAF made the airfield available. Any up-and-coming developer of valuation and risk management software for structured financial products should have a copy.”—Darrell Duffie, Dean Witter Distinguished Professor of Finance, Stanford University”An original and challenging book, combining fundamental programming concepts and financial modeling for portfolios and derivatives analysis.” – Helyette Geman, Birkbeck, University of London and ESSEC Business School”This is an excellent book that encourages financial experts and software Architects to collaborate on Structured Finance business. The book effectively describes the pricing, hedging and risk management for Structured Financial products along with the Object Oriented Programming. The derivatives are explained simply in terms of replicated portfolios and cash flows without any heavy mathematics so that IT engineers will find it easy to read.” – Ryozo Miura, Hitotsubashi University, Tokyo, Japan”Umberto Cherubini and Giovanni Della Lunga’s book is unique as it is the first successful attempt to bridge the gap between IT professionals and quants/Structures, and propose a consistent object oriented programming framework to deal with structured products. Without any doubt this book will become ‘The’ reference on the trading desks, not only to those concerned with the design of consistent data structures for complex derivatives, but also to the quants looking for a good review of pricing models.” – Michel Crouhy, Head of Research and Development, NATIXIS

It was held in Brighton, April 8-12, 1991, and was organized by the Department of Computing, Imperial College, London. The proceedings of TAPSOFT ‘91 are organized into three parts: – Colloquium on Trees in Algebra and Programming (CAAP); – Advances in Distributed Computing (ADC); – Colloquium on Combining Paradigms for Software Development (CCPSD). The first part (CAAP) is contained in Vol. 1, the other two parts constitute Vol. 2. CAAP ‘91 focuses on the following topics: – Logical, algebraic and combinatorial properties of discrete structures (strings, trees, graphs, etc.), including the theory of formal languages considered in the broad sense as that of sets of discrete structures and the theory of rewriting systems over them. – Application of discrete structures in computer science: syntax and semantics of programming languages, operational semantics, logic programming, algorithms and data structures, complexity of algorithms and implementation aspects, proof techniques for nonnumerical algorithms, formal specifications, and visualization of structured objects. The ADC talks by distinguished invited speakers survey current developments in distributed computing, including the integration of different paradigms for concurrency, algebraic, logical and operational foundations, and applications to software engineering and formal methods. The CCPSD papers address aspects of the trend in software engineering towards unification and synthesis combining theory and practice, and merging hitherto diverse approaches.

The theme, structure, contents, and, not lastly, the clarity of explanations recommend this book as the best advocate for learning, using, and promoting OCL, UML, and MDA. I am sure that this work will contribute in a significant manner to the development and widespread use of new software technologies.”         —Dan Chiorean             Head of the Computer Science Research Laboratory             Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj”In this thoroughly revised edition, Jos and Anneke offer a concise, pragmatic, and pedagogic explanation of the Object Constraint Language (OCL) and its different applications.
